The Munich Massacre that took place during the 1972 Olympic games was a terrorist attack against members of the Israeli Olympic team orchestrated by a militant terrorist organization called Black September. Eight Palestinian terrorists stole into the Olympic Village, killed two Israeli athletes and took nine others hostage. The terrorists demanded that 234 Arab prisoners incarcerated in Israel and two German terrorists in Frankfurt be released, as well as their own safe passage out of Germany. After an ill-fated rescue attempt, the crisis ended with a huge gunfight that left five of the terrorists and all of the nine hostages dead. Following the massacre, the Israeli government organized a retaliation against Black September, called Operation Wrath of God, to assassinate all those suspected of being involved.
On ABC news at 3:24 AM, September 6, German time, Jim Mckay made the world-shocking announcement confirming the deaths of all the hostages.
“…it makes sense that the responsibility lies within the country that won the honor and responsibility of running good Olympics… You know, I came to Munich as an athlete, and so when this thing happened it is like the whole reality of Judaism and Israeli nation was a political struggle with the Palestinians and all of that and suddenly this superseded the athletic aspect.”
